WHITE RHINO

The name "white" rhino is a mistranslation by the English of the name originally given to it by the Dutch who named it "wijd"rhino" in reference to its wide lip. The Dutch so named it to easily distinguish it from the Black rhino which has a conspicuously pointed lip. Weiss does not mean white, but wide, and refers to the rhino's lower lip which is very wide. The distinction was to recognize it as very different from the Black rhino which has a conspicuously sharply pointed lip.
