This photo was taken at the village of Grundarfjordur in western Iceland, in the north of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. In front we have the Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall and in the back the Kirkjufell mountain.Time
This shot was made ou my second day in Grundarfjordur around 2:30 a.m. just before sunrise in the beginning of June, where the night never really gets dark in that latitudes in that time of the year.Lighting
In this shot you just have to wait for the right time, sit and enjoy the scenery, with a coat, yes it's June, but it's also Iceland at 2:30 a.m. Then, the light will come, and you will be there to enjoy and capture the moment!Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 550D, on a tripod, with Canon EF-S 15-85mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM @ f11Inspiration
I thought that it would be fun to capture the golden moment at 2:30 a.m. just before sunrise. In fact, it could have been the sunset a few hours before, but from the point of view of this shot, the sunset would be to hidden by the Kirkjufell mountain, so I decided to wait until the sunrise so the light would be more strong on the right side of Kirkjufell.Editing
This shot it's an HDR image processed with Aurora HDR Pro. This is a composition of 5 RAW images at f11, ISO 100, with exposures ranging from 1/15 seconds to 1 second. First the white balance was corrected in Lightroom, and then the images were processed in Aurora HDR Pro.In my camera bag
Usually I carry my walkaround Canon EF-S 15-85mm, the 50mm f1.8 for some portraits and creativity, to use on my oldest body the 550D. Recently I've upgraded my body to a Canon 7d Mark II, and bought a Samyang 16mm f2 to use on my new body, to a new level of landscape and astrophotography that I just started to like.Feedback
First of all, go during the summer to Iceland, the weather is warmer! In the case of this shot, you have a lot of time for pull for your creativity, as the sun sets around 11p.m. and the sunrise was a little while after 2:30 a.m., that gave me around 2:30h to play around the waterfall. Tripod is mandatory, as you can have long exposures. Plan ahead, use google maps, now what you will find, pack all your gear, don't leave the zoom at home just because you are set for a landscape. And finally, take a coat and maybe some gloves, it's summer in Iceland! :)
