Location
Bodie, California.Time
This was one of my favorite images from my Bodie trip in November. The park closes at 6:00pm and this one was taken around 5:00pm, right before it started getting dark.Lighting
The majority of the day was partially cloudy, but as the day went on, the clouds got heavier and the rain began to come and go. I love clouds in photographs as it adds a special dynamic to the image. Right after this image was taken it began to rain. It ended up snowing that evening.Equipment
This image was shot with a Canon T2i and the Canon 10-22mm f/3.5 lens. A Polarizing filter was used. No tripod or flash.Inspiration
This trip was truly a bucket list item. Ever since I was little I had wanted to go to Bodie. The mystery of a ghost town was all too intriguing. The weather was scheduled to be raining with a chance of snow in the evening; however, we had been planning this trip for a long time so we decided to go anyways. I am so glad we did! I was worried about the weather the entire time, but am so glad that the storm rolled in as it helped create some amazing shots.Editing
For my landscape photography I shoot in raw and edit in Lightroom. I typically keep editing to a minimum and more natural as I want people to see exactly what I saw. With this particular images I decreased the shadows a bit more than normal to add more depth and dynamic. In my camera bag
There are three things that are a staple in my bag. My wide angle lens (10-22mm f/3.5), my documentary lens (24-105mm f/4), and my Canon T2i. When I know I am going to see wildlife I pack my 100-400mm f/4 lens. Additional equipment that is a must have are extra batteries, SD cards, a tripod, heliopan polarizer filter, headlamp just in case it gets dark, and a lens cleaning kit. Just recently I have upgraded my camera gear to a Sony A7Rii, a 16-35mm Sony Zeiss lens, and a Sigma MC11 adapter for my Canon Lenses. I am so excited to begin to share the photos that I take with this new camera!Feedback
1. Know that weather isn't a bad thing. If the storm hadn't rolled through , this image would have a plain blue sky which would be beautiful, but the clouds add so much more. 2. Morning and evening make for some of the best images. My best images have been during the last hour of sunlight. 3. Plan your trip and have patience. If you don't like what the clouds are doing at that time, wait. The clouds will move and the picture will change. 4. Most importantly, Have Fun!
