Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during the Skagit Valley Tulip festival up in Skagit Valley, Washington.

Time

This image was taken later in the afternoon around 3pm.

Lighting

The natural light was beautiful for this image. If I wouldn't have crouched down to get to the level of the tulips I wouldn't have seen how beautiful the light truly was.

Equipment

I used my Canon T2i camera paired with my 50mm Sigma Art lens. There was no tripod or flash, the natural light was perfect!

Inspiration

I have always wanted to take images of the tulip fields; however, I thought I had to go out of the country to do so. To my surprise there is this massive tulip festival in Washington which is only a few states away! There was a bit of planning for this image as the Tulip festival only occurs during the month of April. Luckily the tulips were in full bloom during my trip to the Skagit Tulip Festival up in Skagit Valley, Washington. I was so ecstatic to be there. It was definitely a bucket list item checked off :)

Editing

For my landscape photography I shoot in raw and edit in Lightroom. I typically keep editing to a minimum and more natural as I want people to see exactly what I saw. With this particular images I bumped my clarity ever so slightly along with bumping my highlights and decreasing my shadows to add a little more dynamic to the image.

In my camera bag

There are three things that are a staple in my bag. My wide angle lens (10-22mm f/3.5), my documentary lens (24-105mm f/4), and my Canon T2i. When I know I am going to see wildlife I pack my 100-400mm f/4 lens. Additional equipment that is a must have are extra batteries, SD cards, a tripod, heliopan polarizer filter, headlamp just in case it gets dark, and a lens cleaning kit. Just recently I have upgraded my camera gear to a Sony A7Rii, a 16-35mm Sony Zeiss lens, and a Sigma MC11 adapter for my Canon Lenses. I am so excited to begin to share the photos that I take with this new camera!

Feedback

1. Know that weather isn't a bad thing. 2. Even though Mornings and evenings make for some of the best images don't be afraid to take pictures in the afternoon. If I wouldn't have had my camera with me during this afternoon stroll, I wouldn't have gotten this shot. 3. Plan your trip and have patience. 4. Most importantly, Have Fun and always carry your camera!
