Location
This photo was taken at The Natural Bridge State Park in Virginia. It still has a monument that George Washington placed there when he surveyed it in the 1700s. I had never been there before but my companion has returned many times.Time
This photo was taken around 1pm on Dec. 31, 2015 and since it was very cold day, there weren't a lot of people there which helped the composition of the photo.Lighting
What struck me about wanting to capture this photo was the varied light properties: be it direct or reflected on the walls or on the water. Those individual lighting properties comes with the added bonus of accentuating textures of all the surfaces in the photo.Equipment
This photo was taken with my hand held iPhone and no flash. Since I had never been to this park before, I didn't know what to expect and it is kind of a hike to the bridge. Next time will be the DSLR.Inspiration
The inspiration to take this photo came from the varied light properties and also the curves of the bridge, the walls, the river and the foot path. My impression of the composition was one of flowing curves which appealed to me.Editing
I did some post-processing to the extent of punching up the blue sky since my iPhone doesn't have a polarizer on it and I cropped it to accentuate the curve of the foot path.In my camera bag
I normally have a Nikon D90 with 3 Nikkor lenses: 1.1m/3.61ft 52mm, 18-55mm 1:3.5-.6 G 52mm, and (from my Nikon F9) 28-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 D 72mm. I also just bought 2 circular ND filters for the 52mm and the 72mm but I have yet to try them out. Another camera that I just purchased was a Cannon Elph which is what I carry around in my purse in case I see something that my iPhone cannot quite capture. I am still getting used to it.Feedback
If you see something that you like be it the composition or the lighting, don't be afraid to take the shot and use the camera that you have with you. I usually take a breath before clicking the shutter to check the composition in the viewfinder because sometimes I get excited and start shooting and the composition is poor.
