Location
I took this photo in my friends backyard of about two acres.Time
It was midday, and a dull gray sky on the day we had planned to do pictures.Lighting
The original picture was a capture of a teenager playing with his littlest sister while I took some photos of his older sister and cousin. The moment was genuine. He's a wonderful big brother.Equipment
I shoot with a Nikon d7000 and on this day I believe I was using my 50mm 1.8 with no flash. I had the shutter super fast to freeze the motion and the aperture open go grab as much light as possible.Inspiration
The teenager is so attentive to his little sister and loves so much to make her giggle I just could not resist.Editing
I added the dramatic sunset and shading to emphasize the subjects and also bring some pop to a relatively flat original. In my camera bag
I typically carry a wide angle sigma art 17-70, my 50 1.8 and a 70-300. This way I'm ready for just about everything.Feedback
I believe that it's not just about the photo and the setting but also having a vision of what it can become. I feel you do have to start with a pretty solid photo with proper focus on your subject to begin with, but not to worry too much about the background because it can be manipulated. My advice is research what you like in photos and try to mentally break them down to see how the photo was achieved. Then try and replicate the process making your own creative changes.
