Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is one of my favourites, taken at Lake Sambell in Beechworth, Victoria, Australia. I had already walked along this area about a week before hand and knew it would be a great photo.

Time

For the photo I knew I needed the "golden hour" and had already researched on my app "Star Walk" what time sunset would be and in what direction, was taken around 6:30pm and the sky just lit up with colour.

Lighting

As said before I used Star Wall, given its a great app for working out my Astro shots. But its a great help for sunset times. The clouds seemed to line up perfectly, be at the right hight for the Sun to set and shine underneath and give them this amazing orange colour as well as lighting up the sky.

Equipment

This was taken with my Nikon D600 with a 24-85 Nikkor Lens. And using my Vanguard ALTA PRO 263AB 100 tripod

Inspiration

Well I'm a massively into sunsets, theyre so beautiful and never the same. When walking along this area a week before I could see the beauty, and how calm the water was making it a great reflective source for sunsets. And it payed off!

Editing

I always do some post-procressing, given that all my photos I take in raw. But this was different, the colour was almost perfect straight from the camera, I made very slight adjustments and that was it!

In my camera bag

Being a small time photographer trying to make a name for myself my gear isn't as extensive as others. I live on a budget so camera gear is expensive for me. But I've always been able to save and get what I want, just like my Nikon D600, I got the camera with 24-85 kit lense. I also have a f/1.4 50mm and have just rented out a 70-300mm. My tripod is a Vanguard ALTA PRO 263AB 100, and I just love it! The Weight capabilities is amazing, very study tripod and when it's windy, thats a definite need. Transporting all this gear I have two ways, for long trips or overseas I have my Pelican hard Case, they're recommended by so many photographers, and I definitely stand by them and the case. I also have a lowePro backpack, which is great for long walk.

Feedback

Scout your location first, might seem like a waste of time, but it helps. If I ever plan a location shoot. I'll always go check it days, weeks or even months before hand, researching where the Sun will set. It isn't a big tip but helped this image and thats looking for reflective surfaces, calm water is the best, especially lakes and dams. They're calm majority of the time so you'll get so much detail. Golden hour is massive key for shots like this. That hour before the Sun disappears, there is a reason landscape photographers love it.
