Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a photography road trip I did along The Great Ocean Road, in Australia. I went down Gibson Stairs onto the beach, and loved these colours.

Time

To this day this is one of my favourite photos I have taken, I had arrived at the 12 apostles at around 4pm. I looked around, had a touristy look at the lookouts around the cliff face, then started to work out where I should do some photos. I noticed stairs onto the beach, and that led me down to this angle. Ended up being fairly late, around 5:30pm as the sun was starting to set in on Jun 13th, 2014

Lighting

This amazing purple colour was appearing as the sun was setting, and I remember being memorized by it. I've seen my share of amazing red and orange sunsets, but the purple was truly amazing. Being late I was able to slow my shutter speed to get this amazing flow of the water along the beach.

Equipment

This was taken with my Nikon D600, Nikkor 50mm 1:1.4 D and Vanguard Abeo 243AB Tripod with SBH-50 Ball Head

Inspiration

The rocks in the fore ground were a must have for in my photo. They worked well to with the long exposure, and with one of the Apostles behind that with the purple sky was a definite attraction for me. With the waves flowing onto the beach, into the rocks creating this misty look on the beach around them, I couldn't of been happier with the outcome of this photo.

Editing

Taken in RAW I definitely had to. But I was amazed at how the colours came out. I added some slight clarity, and a tiny amount of contrast. The brightness was perfect from the camera. I didn't have to fiddle with any of the specific colours, no saturation was needed.

In my camera bag

Always my Nikon D600 as it is currently my only camera. Given I only have one tripod, the Vanguard Abeo 243AB Tripod with SBH-50 Ball Head is a must in every trip I do, I also take my Nikkor 24-85mm 1:3.5 - 4.5 G along with my Nikkor 50mm 1:1.4 D and a recent add to my gear is my Nikkor AF-S 70-300MM F4.5-5.6G VR.

Feedback

This image was taken in June, with places like this, its a very crowded place middle of Summer. It's a major attraction the 12 Apostles, but time it right it will be slightly quieter. Explore your surroundings, look for rocks or even ship wrecks in the water close to shore, or even on shore to give some extra detail to your photo, this was taken with a 20 second shutter speed, to create the smoothness in the water and an f-stop of f/29. Being winter, 5:30pm starts to get quite dark so I used that to my advantage of being able to open my lens right up and slow the shutter speed right down, bringing in as much light as possible. Take your time with these photos, rushing never works well, and take a lot of photos changing settings till you get it just right. Spend time around the area as well. You may miss some amazing light if you rush in, get one shot, then leave straight away. I was on this beach for a good hour and a half, looking around, watching the light. And of course have fun but be safe! This beach isn't a patrolled beach, so no life savers, keep that in mind around lots of beaches too.
