Wait for a time of day where the moon is bright so you get those crisp, sharp details, and wait till the sky is dim or nearly black so you don't get a blown out background.Equipment
Shot with a Canon 5d mark III and a sigma 150-600 C lens. Handheld.Inspiration
Noticed that everything required to create the perfect lunar photograph were there.Editing
Yes, Took the RAW file into ps where properties such as clarity, haze level, crontrast, sharpness, etc. were adjusted. In my camera bag
I normally have my 5d mark III, 50 1.8, 24-105, 150-600 and a variety of equipment for large format photography as well.Feedback
Stability, small aperture and a fast shutter speed. Those are the only ways you'll get a good handheld moon shot. Of course you can use a tripod if you have one on-hand, but that's not always the case. You could be out shooting wildlife and just happen to notice the perfect moon. The brighter the moon the better. The brighter it is the higher you can bump that shutter speed and the higher you can bump the aperture. This works great if you have a fairly decent low light sensor that can handle a higher iso. If that's not the case for you, a low iso (100-400) paired with a faster shutter speed and if possible an aperture of f.8 or less if possible.
