Location
I took this photo at Kata Yai, the largest of the two beaches in Kata, Phuket, Thailand. The mother and the child had fallen asleep close to a stone wall and partly laying in the shadows from some beach palms trees.Time
This was taken at midday, so at the hottest time of the day, with the sun riding high in the sky.Lighting
Light on the beach was very stark, so at this time of day finding some motives in the shadows was an almost must.Equipment
The photo was taken with my Sony NEX-7, using a Sony 55-210 mm lens. The ISO used was 320, the focal length 139 mm, the aperture 5.2 and the shutter speed 1/250. The shot was handheld and no fill flash was used.Inspiration
The intense feeling of closeness between the mother and child and the unusual calmness around them. I was very fascinated by this motive and took several photos with some variations.Editing
Yes I have worked on the photo in Photoshop, cropped it closer to avoid any disturbing bits, so to just focus in on the two heads in such a close contact. Also I modified light, contrast and sharpness a bit.In my camera bag
My equipment changes with time of course and now I always bring my Canon 7D Mk II with a Canon 70-300 mm IS L lens. This is the equipment I mostly use for my street photography, my street portraits and other things where I need to take a picture very rapidly and need a very fast and reliable focusing. The second camera I bring now in my bag is a Sony a7R MkII and on this I usually have my Sony 10-18 mm wide angel lens and this I mostly use for landscape or city photography, at times when I have a bit more time to focus and arrange the motive in the viewfinder. For flower and macro shots I use a macro enabled Sony 90 mm lens on my Sony a7R which works very well and give good sharpness. I also usually have at least one small Sony flash in the bag, 3-4 spare batteries for each camera, and 3-4 SD cards as reserve. For tripod I use a lightweight Manfrotto travel version.Feedback
My advice is to always scout for the unexpected when you are out shouting street photography. It is OK to wander around of course, but many times it is better to be still at one place and let the motives "flow" around you. That gives you more time to select and shoot rapidly, something essential for my kind of street photography.
