Tarpana‬ is a term in the ‪Vedic‬ practice which refers to an offering made to divine entities. It is believed that one’s ancestors will be eagerly awaiting for tarpana on all the above-mentioned occasions. If no offering is made, they will return to their places disappointed, and the descendant misses their blessings which he would have received, if he had performed his filial duties

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken during one of my street photo outings, where we were covering the rituals and festivities on Mahalaya in Kolkata.

Time

It was early in the day, but fairly sunny which helped me to decide the camera settings accordingly

Lighting

I wanted the photograph to tell a story as well as have that drama in it. I had to decide and then strategically position myself at a vantage point so that I could bring out the narrative with the priest guiding the others through the ritual.

Equipment

Nikon D7000, Nikkor 18-55mm lens

Inspiration

My inspiration was the ritual and customary tradition of Tarpana itself. But I surely wanted to do something different avoiding the clutter with on the face shots.

Editing

I processed the image in Black and White as I had visualised it when composing the shot

In my camera bag

I usually travel light with one camera body, with attached zoom lens not beyond 80mm and a prime. I also like to keep a few UV and CPL filters handy just in case

Feedback

Always try to capture something unique with a narrative. Judging the lighting conditions and then choosing the right ISO, so that one can quickly manouever the Aperture and Shutter speed to catch the moment definitely helps
