Location
I took this picture in the Deadvlei in Namibia, it's one of the driest places there. You only have some dead trees, a dry riverbed and a lot of sand, actually not really Special but such a beautiful and magical place.Time
It was at the later morning, around 11 o'clock and it was terribly hot, almost 50°C. I can remember that some people from our group tried to walk barefoot or with slippers but the sand was so hot that it burned their skin. The disadvantage of group travelling is that you aren't flexible so it was unfortunately a bit to late for an interesting sun and shads play but I was lucky that it had this smooth Clouds, which make the photo much better.Lighting
In the Namib desert you have a really strong sun and the sun is very early very high and you won't have nice shads. My disadvantage was that I travelled with a group and I couldn't be there earlier, happily It was for this area very cloudy, which made the picture much better and more interesting and probably saved it.Equipment
I just used my old Nikon D5000 with the 18-250mm Sigma lens and no other equipment. In my opinion a very good and especially very flexible combination for landscape and wildlife photography. But I must say today I would take it a bit different and probably with a ND-filter.Inspiration
The landscape there was amazing and I took many pictures with many different views but this one I like the most. The fallen trunk makes this tree group very Special and much more interesting than the other pictures. The clouds were also at the best position and in combination with the other trees and the dunes in the background it looks very surreal.Editing
Nothing special, just a normal RAW post-processing in Lightroom. In my camera bag
During this trip I just had a Nikon D5000 and the 18-250mm Sigma. Now I mostly use my D600 with the Nikon 24mm 2.8D, the Nikon 50mm 1.8D. They are old but still great and very important, they are light and small! For me it's very important because I'm often in the mountains and with the tent, sleeping bag, tripod, food, water and all my other stuff I have to carry almost 20kg and than I'm very happy about this light lenses. For macro and wildlife photography I use a Sigma 105mm 2.8 and the Sigma 150-600mm lens, which are not always that comfortable to carry at the back like the 24mm lens. I also like to work with ND-filter and polarization filter.Feedback
My most important advice is, the earlier you are there, the better. The light is much more interesting, you have less tourists and very important in Namibia it's extremely hot at noon. If you can travel with friends or alone, you're much more flexible, with non photographers it's always a bit difficult to be at the right place at the right time. Search an angle where you have a fore-, middle- and a background and try to keep the picture easy and clean. Play with different angles and views, often pictures looks at the computer different than in real. I also started to study the place where I want to go first on Internet and search on Google Maps for an interesting view and special features of the place. That helps me to take the picture which I want.
