Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at spitzkoppe in namibia during my travel through southern africa.

Time

I took the photo at half past 6 in the evening to ensure good light, because on sunny days you have always quite a harsh light in the afternoon. Fortunately, I was quite lucky with the weather and therefore it had also a really nice and cloudy sky which gives the images a bit a more dramatic and even more fascinating look.

Lighting

Try to takes your photos early or late in the day to avoid harsh lighting or if you are lucky you may have a really cloudy sky which gives the sparse landscape a truly dramatic look.

Equipment

I used my old Nikon D5000 with a Sigma 18-250mm lens

Inspiration

There was no real inspiration about the photo. I would rather say that you don't have another choice than photographing the stunning landscape and rockformations around spitzkoppe as long as possible.

Editing

There is actually not that much to tell because I always try that my photos are as close as possible to how they looked in reality. I just used lightroom for a simple RAW-processing like lighten up the shadows and sharpen the image.

In my camera bag

In the meantime my equipment changed quite a lot but I still try to keep it light and simple, my legs and my back are also quite thankfull for this choice during hiking or travelling. Mostly, I use my Nikon D600 and a Nikon 24mm f2.8 lens for most of my landscape photography. I think these works great and they're still small and light, which makes travelling much easier. Sometimes I have also a Nikon 50mm f1.8, a Sigma 105mm f2.8 and a Sigma 150-600mm lens in my back. Additionally, I always use a Manfrotto tripod, some ND-filter, an external shutter release and some spare batteries for all electrical stuff.

Feedback

I think in such a stunning place there is not really an advice necessary to take great images, just walk around with open eyes and you will get tons of breathtaking photos.
