Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Pasir Ris Park, located in the East of Singapore.

Time

This is my favourite out of all the shots I have taken so far. It was mid day, I was out at the park strolling, hoping to capture butterflies with my newly purchased 60mm macro lens. I was lucky to have spotted this beautiful insect. The sweltering heat from the sun made it challenging for me to take the shot as I stood still for about 30 minutes waiting for the Common Tiger to settle down.

Lighting

I wanted to be able to capture butterflies easily using a macro lens, without the aid of a tripod. Therefore, I planned to have the lighting at its harshest time of the day. As I scouted around the park, I found a spot where the butterflies were lingering. It was perfect with the sun shining down, the bark of the tree in the background gave a very sweet raw umber bokeh effect.

Equipment

This was shot with an Olympus OMD EM 10 with the m. zuiko 60mm macro lens.

Inspiration

The idea of appreciating the little things in life inspired me to take this photo. I really wanted to challenge myself to turn an ordinary subject, into something that people can look at with a different eye. The Common Tiger butterfly is the most common butterfly in Singapore but its almost unnoticed.

Editing

I love my photos to be as how I shot them, without much editing. As for processing, the sharpening tool is my go to enhance the little details of the subject. I sharpened the butterfly and made the wing slightly saturated from its usual color.

In my camera bag

I just started out this new hobby so all I have with me is my trusted Olympus OMD EM 10, its fantastic kit lens 14-42mm and the 60mm macro lens! Also a spare battery just in case.

Feedback

Be prepared for any environment that you're going to head into be it hot or cold! As for my case, a huge load of patience and an iced cold drink would be awesome. I usually stand, squat, and arch about, almost like a human tripod to reach in to get my shots. If you're planning to shoot around the parks and forested areas in Singapore, be sure to dress lightly as you're about to embark on a very humid adventure. Always be patient and ready at all times to ensure that you don't lose the moment that you're looking to snap! Patience is a virtue but sometimes, you have to follow your subject silently and tactically to get a good shot. All good things come to those who wait, the best things come to those who go out and get them! :D
