The Montseny massif, declared a Nature Reserve in 1978 and a World Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO, covers a area of 30,120 hectares. The beauty and diversity of the landscape has inspired various artists, writers and intellectuals.

Montseny is the largest and highest massif of the Pre-littoral mountain range and comprises three mountain areas: the Turó de l’Home crest (1,706 metres) and Les Agudes (1,703 metres), the Matagalls (1,697 metres) and the Pla de la Calma (Puig Drau, 1,344 metres). The hydrographic network of this natural area includes three main basins that flow into the Mediterranean sea: the Congost river, Tordera and the Riera Major.

The differences in humidity and temperature of the diverse environments, makes it a natural area with an extraordinarily rich vegetation. In the lower areas we can find typically Mediterranean formations of vegetation; in the rainy mid-mountain area, mountain holm oak forests and oak woods; in the areas above 1,000 metres, beech woods and fir trees and on the peaks, scrubland and alpine meadows.

On the other hand, this area is inhabited by a large number of species: the typical fauna of central-European lands populate the highest areas of the massif, whilst on the lower slopes species of more southern Mediterranean environments predominate.

Nowadays, forestry and agricultural, animal and farming activities have lost considerable weight in the area in favour of the services sector (rural tourism, restaurants and hotels), which has become one of the main economic driving forces of the area.
