I really enjoy pictures of wildlife, particularly bald eagles and wolves. There is intensity in the wolf to the left that just stirs something. Great photo!

Behind The Lens

Location
This was taken at Lakota Wolf Preserve in New Jersey. Yes we have wolves in NJ. I was on a photography field trip sponsered by a lens company so was able to use a long lens I would not normally have been able to afford.
Time
We were at the preserver just at sunrise getting some wonderful images of the artic wolves haloed by the golden light but this is one of my favorite of the day and was taken later in the morning around 7:30 am.
Lighting
The lighting earlier in the morning was actually better we had some great golden light and I have many great images wolves in the golden light but this one was my favorite even though it was taken in a very wooded shady area of the preserve and the lighting was diffuse.
Equipment
My trusty Nikon D7100 and a Tamaron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3, this was a borrowed lens and not something I normally have in my bag but If I was going to be doing extensive wildlife photography I would definately think about getting something in this focal range. I am so used to having a tripod with me and never having done any wildlife photography I actually brought one with thinking there would be a time I may use it. I was wrong. I never even touched my tripod.
Inspiration
I was watching this pack of Eastern Timber wolves interact and snapping pics now and then, when I saw this wolf on the right had started to walk over with her head lowered to the wolf on the left I wasnt sure what was going to happen there had been several fights break out that I what I actually thought I was going to capture but she just walked over touched noses and passed by. I had taken seveal images leading up to this one. I did not even see the thirds wolf in the background till afterword while reviewing the images.
Editing
I had been dabbling in B&W post processing and when I saw this image I immediatley knew it had to B&W the original color is beautiful but this image is about the interaction and I think the B&W brings that out without the distraction of colors.
In my camera bag
I always have my Nikon D7100 with at least 2 or 3 lenses depending on what I am going out to shoot. I usually have a 16-85mm and a 70-210mm, but I have been known to go out with a wideangle 10-20mm, 105mm macro or even just grabbing my nifty fifty.
Feedback
I am not a wildlife photographer but love to try new things and expand my photographic experiences. I love to experiment and I learn something new from every adventure I take. My advice is to always try something new even if it is not your usual niche you never know where your best image may come from.
