Behind The Lens

Location

This flower grows in front garden of my late Nanna's house at the Bellarine Peninsula in VIC, Australia. We have kept the house in the family, so it is a wonderful place full of old memories, and where we are also creating more memories for the next generation.

Time

This was taken in the morning at about 8am. We had just come back form a walk to the beach, where I was trying to capture the sunrise over the ocean. Landscape photography is not my forte, and I was feeling deflated with the results. Then I walked past this flower and noticed the feather resting on it. I took my time in taking it, and just knew that I had a shot that I would be happy with. So it was worth getting up early for sunrise pictures, just to find this treasure on the way back.

Lighting

I didn't do anything fancy with the lighting. I only try to use natural light, which there was plenty of in this case.

Equipment

I use a Nikon D3200, with a Sigma Art Series 35mm lens. The lens was fairly new when I took this and I was in love with the huge aperture you can get with it. I had to practice restraint and make sure that I had a good dept of field and not just have a sliver of the flower in focus!

Inspiration

The small things in nature always inspire me. We walk past so much everyday, without noticing the beauty around us. With my photography, I am always trying to bring attention to the wonderful things around us. How many people walked past this flower without noticing that it cradled a tiny feather?

Editing

Quite simply, the only post processing that was done, was adding a bit of darkness to the background. It didn't need anything more than that, and to be honest, I don't own any complicated programs. I have just recently started using the Google Nik Collection.

In my camera bag

With all aspects of my photography, I try to keep things to a minimum. My camera bag consists of my camera which has my prime lens attached, the 55mm lens it came with, a lens pen, and I have recently acquired a pair of Lume Cubes which are turning out to be a lot of fun! I also have a good Alta Pro tripod.

Feedback

To capture photos like this, all you need is to stop and look around you. Equipment-wise, it doesn't matter what you have. You could have the most impressively stocked camera bag in the world, but what use is it if you are walking past the environment around you? I would assume that most photographers already that taken the blinkers off, because that is what photography is all about. (Isn't there a website out there that has the quote by Berenice Abbott say "Photography helps people to see"). Take it one step further, and look for the beauty that is often overlooked. My nature photos are not set up, or manipulated. They are taken with an open eye and an ability to use the light around it. If I had any technical advice, it would just be to get to know your camera well, so know know how far you can push the ISO, and what aperture works best with your subjects distance to get that soft, artistic quality.
