Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Los Morillos Lighthouse historical area, in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. I love this site a lot, for its sunsets splendorous simple beauty. There is a lighthouse, and one of the most beautiful beaches you can find. Don't miss this place during your next visit to Puerto Rico.

Time

Wow! My wife and I planned this trip, about 45 minutes from home, to photograph a rock formation next to the place seen in this picture. We got there and decided to setup our cameras here because we were late to take the sunset and the other place was crowded. Right after setting up and beginning to shoot, this couple with their kid (barely seen in front of her) decided to walk up front to take some selfies. The picture that you see here was the very first one of many that I took of that couple on February 28, 2016 at 6:21 PM. Photography is not about capturing something. It's more about capturing a moment.

Lighting

My desire was to be able to transmit all the beauty I was witnessing in that moment. I have been an amateur photographer for a long time with very little formal training. Last year I took a photography course with my friend professional photographer Roberto Bonilla and had seen a workshop video about high dynamic range (HDR), so I decided to give it a try. Three pictures in Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB) +/- 2 EV were taken using ambient light. Technical details are: ISO-100, F-Stop f/5.6, Exposure times – 1/125 sec, 1/500 sec and 1/2000 sec, format- RAW.

Equipment

For this shot I used a Canon 20D, with a 24mm f/2.8 STM lens and a tripod.

Inspiration

This was my first true HDR picture using a tripod. I had seen many HDR pictures, and that technique got my attention from the first time I saw it. I had taken some HDR photos before, but still learning and practicing. This was more a kind of opportunity photo than a well planned shooting.

Editing

I used Photomatix Pro for tone mapping and merge. Photoshop CS6 with Camera Raw plugin was used to improve exposure and get rid of the ghost produced by the couple's movement.

In my camera bag

I like to travel light, and my bag is always ready. There is my old buddy, a Canon 20D, my only DSLR so far, along with a Canon 28-135mm. For flash photography I have a Canon Speedlight 430 EX. This has been my workhorse and basic load since 2005 until I decided to add a couple of items. Last year I added a Canon 24mm f/2.8 pancake lens, and B&W circular polarizer filters for each lens. I love this prime because its tinny size makes it easier to move around with camera on hand whenever that focal length is appropriate.

Feedback

Puerto Rico is a little island in the Caribbean. As such, weather is most likely hot and humid. Depending on the season and wind direction, you may find rain in the afternoon. This is a good thing as clouds add a lot to any landscape photo either before or after raining. Because of outdoor humidity, keep you equipment away from air conditioning. Otherwise, you may find yourself with water condensation all over your lens. There are lots of breathtaking views just waiting for you. Every shooting is an adventure full of fun. Have patience, always willing to experiment, trying new techniques and methods to let your creativity take control of the shooting session.
