Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in the canal that makes part of the water treatment plant in Canmore, Alberta about 15-20 minutes driving from downtown in a trail up in the surrounding mountains.

Time

I'm not a morning person and I prefer sunsets to get that beautiful light in nature. Canadian winters are dark, so it was around 3:30 ish and close to sunset, I was taking my last shots of the day to get back to my car before dark.

Lighting

The day was overcast and I was lucky to get that last ray of light passing through the clouds. Sometimes it's just being at the right moment.

Equipment

My Nikon 5200 and a Sigma lens 18-250, just that.

Inspiration

The beauty of winter and especially water. I find frozen water with all the curious shapes it can adopt simply magical.

Editing

I try to keep my pictures with the minimum processing possible, I think nature is beautiful enough, no need for make up. My post processing consists basically in balancing shadows, highlights and exposure, and if required, a slight color adjustment.

In my camera bag

My equipment is very simple, my Nikon 5200, and my Manfrotto tripod. I don't have back up lenses or bodies, just an extra set of batteries because they use to work less efficiently in extreme cold weather.

Feedback

Winter landscape is very interesting because is always different and ever changing, the same place can always bring new surprises. The only thing stopping me was frozen fingers because it's difficult to change settings with your gloves on. Funny fact, I almost fall into the canal (which is not deep) to take the low angle of this picture. Just go outside, enjoy nature and explore.
