Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken from pier in San Clemente, California
Time
This image was taken at about 9am.
Lighting
The best time to shoot surfers at that location is early morning as the natural light it at its best.
Equipment
I used a Nikon D5300 with a 55-300 nikkor (kit) lens, held manually (no tripod)
Inspiration
I love taking images of surfers and there is a history about this you can read in an article I wrote in NPhoto magazine #40 (contact me to get a copy of the article).
Editing
I did post process this image with Photomatix
In my camera bag
I never leave the home without my Nikon D5300, my 18-55 and 55-300 Nikkor lenses. A backup battery and additional memory cards are standard equipment in my bag.
Feedback
You need to be patient and observe the surfers and how the waves roll in. With so many surfers, you may miss the perfect moment. Follow the surfers with your tele-(zoom) lens and shoot when the moment is perfect as if you often shoot too early, your buffering of the images may prevent you from getting the best of the best shots. Practice a lot until you can predict what the surfers will do next.
