Location
I took this photo from a multi-story parking lot in the arts district overlooking the Downtown LA skyline. I love this spot and always make a point of stopping by when I'm in town!Time
This was taken about 10:00pm when the lights of the buildings are lit by the late-night workers and cleaning crews. I was amazed to see so many people hunched over their keyboards so late!Lighting
I wanted this photo to show the true enormity of Los Angeles while wrapping it all into one frame. I also wanted the lighting to accentuate the late night shifts that so many people are required to work.Equipment
To obtain the shot I used a wide angle lens and a tripod as the length of the exposure would have caused hand-blur without it. Ever since this shoot I have left a simple tripod in my trunk!Inspiration
I am a Los Angeles native and have seen so many people shoot LA in their own unique style. I felt it was important to display the city's size while also shedding light on the late-night workers that take care of business while we are all asleep.Editing
I used Adobe's Lightroom to accentuate the lights and create a strong contrast within the image. It is truly a fantastic program and I am learning new techniques each and every day.In my camera bag
Along with my Canon 700d, my bag normally consists of a Canon 40mm 2.8 prime, Tamron 18-270mm, and the modified wide-angle lens used in this shot. When shooting on the streets I'll typically have a small tripod that I can hide and tuck a remote shutter in my bag just in case a lengthy exposure is required.Feedback
I believe the key to successfully shooting cityscapes is a solid idea of what you want to portray. Due to the amount of architecture and lighting combos the possibilities are endless. I always enjoy seeing a cityscape that brings a different view to an area that is seen by thousands of people every day.
