Fishermen first erected a bridge in 1755 - then a single hand-rope bridge to access the island, known as the 'Rock in the Road' (Carraig a' Ráid). The island sat in the migrating path of salmon as they searched for the river in which they were born; as such Carrick-a-Rede Island was a prime spot for fishing until as recently as 2002.
