After an unexpected stop-over in Antigua I managed to get a few hours to explore this beautiful island in the early hours of the morning. This lone ship was moored up in the middle of this beautiful Caribbean Azure lagoon.

Behind The Lens

Location

I was on a 6 week workation around the Caribbean and we were flying from Barbados to St Kitts but our plane never made it and we ended up spending the night in Antigua with the airline putting us up for the night.

Time

We woke up early to catch the sunrise to discover two terrible things, firstly an open-bar in Antigua combined with an early start isn't the easiest and secondly the sun was hiding behind thick cloud.

Lighting

Although not the greatest lens optically I enjoy the 18-200 i have for its versatility, after missing the sunset I can use it to search for details near and far. The light had only just peeked from the clouds and the brilliant colours of the water came out. Snap Snap.

Equipment

This was shot simply on a Sony a6000 with an 18-200mm lens on a makeshift ledge/tripod combo.

Inspiration

In my rum fueled excitement the night before I convinced a friend of mine to wake up early in the morning and climb onto the roof of this high rise to catch the sunrise. Unfortunatelly the sunrise was terrible but we watched Pelicans fishing as a team for an hour until the sun came out. This is one of those shots that come out as the brilliant sun brought out the beuatiful azure of the Caribbean waters.

Editing

Very little in the way of post-processing, a slight crop, sharpening and contrast in lightroom.

In my camera bag

I never got into photography seriously until the mirrorless cameras were released, i have been using the Sony NEX and mirrorless alpha series exclusively as with the amount of travelling I do size and weight is important. Ironically despite the cameras small size the equipment i have with it now takes up the majority of my airline carry on and is pushing the 8kg limit they normally impose. For this trip i had: Sony a6000, 18-200, 35mm 1.8, macro extension tubes and usual collection of spare battteries.

Feedback

There is a stage every photographer goes through and even I am guilty of this, and that is looking to much at the details, the pixel peeping, the newest gear, the latest lens. Once you realise the best photos will only come when you step away from the computer and you create your own chances and luck. You only have to look at some of the great photos smart phones are capable of taking in the right hands to see its not about what gear you have but how you use it. Get out there, climb roofs, stand in rivers, climb into caves, march up the mountains and realise photography is an outstanding tool to improve your life experiences. I would also like to say I have recently launched my online photography portfolio at www.azura.photography and I welcome you to visit. Thank you David
