Location
I shot this photo in my kitchen sink. First I placed the apple in the sink along with black foam board behind the apple. Next i bounced my flash off the ceiling so that the light would fall indirectly on to the apple. Last but not least, i turned the faucet on to a minimal drip and began to practice catching droplets hitting the apple. I love this way of experimentation as the set up and clean up take very little time. A quick and easy set up allows me to focus on more important things.Time
I can't be sure the time of day this was shot, however, I find myself most creative during the evening hours.Lighting
The lighting set up is crazy simple. A cheap off name brand flash unit that was utilized off camera by placing it on my counter top. I bounced the flash off my kitchen ceiling and angled it so that the light would hit the top of the apple and slightly feather just in front of the apple.Equipment
I shoot with a Nikon d7100. My guess is that this was shot with my 35 1.8 prime as it is my favorite lens. Although i do love to play with all of my lenses. No tripod. Yongnuo flash unit. I really believe that practice and adequate light are more important than the gear we choose.Inspiration
I was inspired by the color red. I love the contrast between the red and the black foam board.Editing
I use photoshop for all of my post-processing. This generally consists of boosting saturation, contrast, and some sharpening. In my camera bag
I always have my Nikon d7100 and my 35 mm 1.8 prime lens with me. I may toss in my zoom lens for long distance shots but i find that i am unable to achieve the clarity that i would like. I would love to invest in a good zoom lens.Feedback
My advice to anyone wanting to try this would be to have plenty of towels handy to clean up splatters. The 7100 is weather sealed but other cameras may need to be protected when attempting this shot. I placed my flash right on the counter when bouncing to keep set up to a minimum. I recommend preparing to shoot many images and moving the faucet in different directions as well as adjusting flow of the drip to see the difference in the splashes. Most importantly have fun!!! Life is to short for anything else. :)
