Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken at Sanatorium Lake, Mt Macedon in Victoria, Australia. This man made lake was built to supply water to a planned tuberculosis hospital that never eventuated. The lake is well known for its intense reflections.Time
I love this image. The boy is my youngest son and when I look at this photograph I always get a sense of him looking up in awe of the gum trees and their reflections. The image was taken on a beautiful spring afternoon on November 28th 2015 at 1.49pmLighting
There was a little bit of good fortune in that my son stayed in the part shade of the trees so his very blond hair wasn't blown out by the full sun of the afternoon. The angle looking back from where I was shooting just lined up close to perfectly as he strolled into the shotEquipment
This was shot on a Canon 70d and a very cheap entry level 70-300 lens that I just happened to have on the camera as my wife wouldn't share our 70-200L :-) It does go to show you can still get a image you are happy with pretty basic equipment.Inspiration
We had been playing at the water’s edge for quite a while and I couldn't seem to capture anything close to the vision of the reflections I had in my head so I had walked away in frustration. I happened to turn around and look back down the dry creek bed to the lake and saw the trees reflecting in the water when my son wandered into the frame then stopped and stared up the trees I just started shooting.Editing
Other than the black and white conversion there was very little post processing. I did a little cropping to remove a stray foot from the edge of the image and some lens correction to clean up some of the fringing that unfortunately is a bit of a problem with the Tamron 70-300 otherwise it was pretty much as shotIn my camera bag
The Canon 70-200 F4 L is always the first lens in the bag as well as our older non VC Tamron 17-50 F2.8. For two relatively old and not particularly expensive lenses the image quality on both is pretty hard to fault and on the 70D they cover pretty much any conditions I would come across. Recently we have added the Canon 6D and 85mm F1.8 to our bag which is just sublime in low light The 70D and 70-200 F4L combination does a cracking job with its decent frame rate and fast auto focus for kid sports and action it does struggle with low light situationsFeedback
Be patient and keep moving around if you can't get the shot you have pictured in your mind but always make sure you have your gear ready when opportunity knocks. I was trying for the image of the reflections but it just didn't look "right". When my son walked into the frame it was instantly obvious what had been missing and his natural wonder at the scene in front of him made the image one of my absolute favourites.
