This is Maggie and her friends. I found them on the coast of their small village towards the south of lake Malawi. I was sat watching the view when her and her friends started giggling next to me asking for sweeties. I gave them a pack of custard creams and some sugar cane to their delight.

I bent down to take a photo of maggie and she looked a bit concerned until I took it and showed her her face on the back of the camera. They all started laughing again and lined up to take turns. (everytime they struck a serious pose ! )
Malawi is currently in the grips of a drought, the rain has now started to come but already most of the countries maize crop has failed (it's staple food, you can can compare it to the potato in Ireland way back in the famine).

Now it costs Maggie's parents 15,000 kwacha (£15) to buy a 50KG bag of maize. Thats a whole months income for the average Malawian and it only lasts the family 25 days, leaving them nothing else to eat. And no other way to get proper nutrients, vitamins, proteins etc other than what little they grow themselves.
It makes you wonder, how the hell can these guys laugh and smile so easily in the face of so many troubles when most people in the U.S or UK etc would find it harder on a normal day in our economically privileged lives !!

We don't need as much as we think to be happy but these kids could do with a lot more to be safe.
At this point i'de love to provide you with a link for a reputable charity thats operating in Malawi but the sad truth is that around 80% of all aid is embezzled by Malawi's corrupt government.

I've never heard about Malawi's strife on the mainstream news so if this is a message you'd like to share please take this opportunity to spread the exposure ! it may bring the world one little step closer to restoring some equality to this wonderful country !
