This photo was taken during my recent trekking expedition to Mt Annapurna in Nepal. It was captured from Poon Hill (3210 mt), Ghorepani, Nepal.Time
This photo was taken on 22 December, 2015 at 06:10 AM. My agenda for that day was to capture the sun rise from Poon hill and to get a clear glimpse of majestic peaks in Annapurna region. I remember waking up at 4 in the morning and starting my journey of 500mt ascent by 4.30 AM. I could feel the chillness of the wind even under 4 layers of clothing. I was just hoping that my camera gear do not catch any moisture from the atmosphere. It took about 70 minutes for me to reach the top of Poon hill (3210mt). As soon as I saw the peeping Sun, I quickly setup my camera and triggered few shots at the Annapurna mountain range. Did I mention that temperature was -4 Celsius ? Yes I am not kidding.Lighting
I was desperately looking to capture the vastness of Annapurna valley in pristine golden light during the sunrise. To my luck I was at the right place in right time. There were hardly any clouds blocking the sun and the landscape was well lit.Equipment
This was shot using Nikon D750 with 24-120mm f4 lens. I did not have the luxury to carry a tripod :-) This is the only equipment I used.Inspiration
The moment I stepped into Nepal I was mesmerized by the views and beauty of tallest mountains in the world. Especially after watching them closely during my mountain flights I have determined to take few wide angle shots to capture the majestic views. During our day long hikes it became difficult to stop at view points and spend time to take those perfect shots. This made me to take a decision to hike very early in the morning to one of the tallest hills in Ghorepani area. Once I was there in those golden hours everything else became easy to capture beautiful photos.Editing
I took this photo in raw by keeping the ISO at 100. I did some white balance and exposure correction to bring liveliness in the picture. However I have untouched the sky since it came out very naturally. In my camera bag
When I am on an expedition trip like this, I carry my wide angle prime Nikon 14mm F2.8, 24-120mm F4 and my lovely full frame DSLR Nikon D750. Even if it is heavy I do not compromise on my camera equipment. I also pack enough zip lock pouches and silica gel to keep moisture out of the camera bag. Enough spare batteries and high speed memory card are a must. Apart from this I always keep my GoPro Hero4 handy to take those quick wide angle shots.Feedback
Mountain regions in Nepal offers breath taking views that one can witness. To grab these opportunities one has to lay out a well derived plan and itinerary. Patience is very key while on hiking and conserve your energy to enjoy and capture wonderful shots. Clear skies are the important factor while capturing landscapes involving mountains. November to December is one of the best seasons we can have clear and stable climate.
