Behind The Lens

Location

I took that picture from the top of Burj Khalifa in Dubaï , level 124 .

Time

It was in the morning , but we had a impressive surprise , because the weather was really special . A strong sand wind recover all the town . it looks like the desert was in the town , and the cityscape lokks like in another planet . It was star wars in life .....

Lighting

The light was very dark and it was a problem with the exposure because really difficult to see details on the skyscrapers and building .The most important problem also was that the wind was so strong that I had some trouble to hold my camera. The wind was strong on the floor but incredible at this level .

Equipment

I didn't use a tripod because it's forbidden at the top of Burj Khalifa to use a tripod . There are also window with a small aperture . I drag my camera into the opening, and as these openings are high, the position for the shoot was very uncomfortable.Use of Canon EOS 5D Mark II F10 1/250s iso640 F47mm aperture 4

Inspiration

It was so impressive . Dubaï is a fantastic modern town , but in this context I had the impression of not being on Earth but in the science fiction film on an other planet ; waiting for extraterrestrials ,a sensation of end of the world .It was attractive and terrifying at the same time

Editing

Of course I need to use postraitement because the fog was so thick that we could almost see nothing.I used lightroom for contrast , exposure and density .

In my camera bag

Most of time I take only my camera , 2 batteries, and a light bag .A heavy bag is always a problem if you have to walk a lot . I take also may compact flash . I only carry a tripod if necessary ,and another camera lens if I think I need it. I have a wide angle, but for landscape I don't like too use it because I find that it flattened the image then requires too many corrections.I still also have a notebook and pen to take notes.Generally I leave my battery charger to the hotel because for the day the batteries have a good autonomy.I still also have a small compact spare in case of failure

Feedback

On this type of terrain we do what we can. Try a setting and sometimes take a picture randomly because you must hold the camera far from your eyes ...... Not having cramping and especially knowing that you will eat a lot of sand ......
