Location
While waiting for my turn to speak at a garden demonstration, I walked around a large oak tree to gather my thoughts. And there he was!Time
This photo was taken around 1 p.m. on a hot July day.Lighting
The brilliance of July in the Midwest provides fabulous lighting for outdoor photography, and the small amount of shade under this oak was just the right combination of lights to show off this little guy who thought he was hiding from the world.Equipment
Using my macro focus, I took this shot with a Lumix FZ40.Inspiration
This little tree frog just looked so adorable, squeezed into the crevice of the tree bark, and watching me carefully with one golden eye. A shot I couldn't resist.Editing
I only cropped the shot and tweaked contrast a hair.In my camera bag
My camera bag contains three always-charged batteries for the FZ40, and two batteries for the mini camera, Lumix DMC-S1. I also carry fresh AAA batteries, extra 8 GB memory cards, lens cloth and brush, lens sun shade, Delkin shade for the digital viewing window, Cokin graduated neutral-density filter, a mini tripod for the little Lumix, a small notebook, pencil, business cards, photo releases, mosquito repellant, sunscreen, bandaids, compass (for when I'm tramping through woods), and pepper spray (also for the woods).Feedback
For getting that perfect nature shot, always have the camera in your hand when you're out walking about. Be ready for anything and make sure the camera is already set for the correct exposure. Sometimes, you only have one instant to get the hiding treefrog or beautiful hummingbird!
