Location
This image was taken near a small town by the name of Edgerton. It`s not far from where I live and so it`s a short drive. At the time this was taken I was a beginning student at Madison Area Tech College in the outstanding photography program they have there.Time
This was taken on November 10th 2014 at around 5:28pm. I had been at another location a very short distance from I took this trying to get pictures of a herd of deer. I was losing light fast and noticed how incredible the clouds looked and so I moved to to try and get a sunset shot. The tree was actually further out and I zoomed in to get a silhouette of it. The sun is directly behind it and around the middle of the tree as you can see. Its one of my favorite images to date.Lighting
I think it`s just one of those sunsets where the lighting and clouds were just right and gave it sort of a dramatic look plus the silhouette of the tree is what makes the image standout more. I think at how orange the sunset was and the darkness of the tree were a great color combination.Equipment
I used a Canon 60D with a 24-105mm lens mounted on a Benro tripod and head. I was at f/7 with a 1/500 exposure and fully zoomed at 105mm. ISO was at 100.Inspiration
It was just one those times where you`re at the right spot and at the right time and the way everything came together was inspiring. When I had noticed how the sky and clouds looked I couldn`t help but try to get a good shot of the sunset.Editing
I did do a little port-processing. I believe I cropped it in a little bit and brought out the colors more with some vibrance and a little saturation plus some contrast. I tried to keep the foreground and tree darker. In my camera bag
The equipment I have in my bag are a Canon 7D MKII and I use a Canon 60D for backup. Lenses are a 50mm, 10-18mm, 24-105mm, and a 100-400mm. All four are excellent lenses but i have to say the 100-400mm is my favorite. I also use a Canon 430 EX II Speedlite. Tripod is a Benro and head as well plus a Movo gimbal head.Feedback
My advice would be to scout areas that may have potential to be a good spot for a sunset shot or even sunrise. Personally I`m always paying attention to what the weather is doing and perhaps what the clouds look like. I have locations that I have scouted and if things look good then I will go to one of them at least a half hour before sunset or sunrise. I think trying to have a plan helps tremendously but when those spur of the moment times come like it happened to me with this image then don`t pass it up.
