Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at an abandoned farm not far from my hometown.

Time

I had taken some daytime shots of this farm and although looked good I wanted to try it at sunset so the time of day this photo was taken was just at sunset on Feb 27th of this year. I used a tripod and picked this building as the best one to shoot out of the several on the farm.

Lighting

I was very pleased at how the sky looked in this image and the way the sun was setting and making the sky the color that it was.

Equipment

I used a Canon 60D with a 10-18mm wide angle lens on a tripod.

Inspiration

I had been by this place several times as a friend of mine lives just down the road from it. I enjoy shooting old buildings, farms, and old architecture so I asked my friend if he knew who owned the place since no one lived on it. He said he did and I got permission to go on it and do some photographing. I was able to go on the land and explore it some and did some daytime shooting. There are several old buildings and the house itself is fire damaged. I knew which direction the sun set and had planned it out to come in the evening and try for some sunset shots of the place and thankfully was able to get some good shots.

Editing

I did some post processing but not a lot of it. Just basic corrections as in contrast and brought out the colors some. Some burning and dodging as well.

In my camera bag

The equipment I normally carry varies on what I`m going for. Landscape and architecture I either use my Canon 60D or 7D Mk II. Wildlife I use the Canon 7D Mk II. Lenses I use are all Canon which are the 10-18mm, 50mm, 24-105mm, and the 100-400mm. I use a Benro tripod and head and just recently purchased a Movo GH700 gimbal head that I`ll be using for wildlife. I also have a Canon 430 speedlite and a light meter.

Feedback

My advice would be to have a plan before you go. I`m always on the look out for new places to shoot and when I do find a place such as an old farm I always get permission first before I do anything. I try to envision how the place I want to photograph would look during a certain time of day, which for me is mostly early morning or sunrise and sunset. I try to make a plan on how I want to shoot it and what I want to use so when I get there I`m not waisting any light. So my best advice is to always be looking and make a plan when you find a place, but also have fun at it.
