I took this photo at Hardwood Hills, one of my favourite local bike trails network in Ontario. It had played host to the Pan Am Games mountain bike race a few weeks previously and I was really keen to try riding the specially built course for myself. Its fair to say it was a little out of my league... So I pulled out my phone and decided I'd always just intended to spend the afternoon taking photos even though I'd left my "proper camera" at home.Time
It was late afternoon by the time I'd got round to this part of the trail. The sun had dropped low enough to cast longer shadows and give a bit of depth to the shot.Lighting
The sunlight reflecting off the inside of the tunnel was the first thing that caught my eye. The repeating bright rings immediately stood out as something worth trying to capture.Equipment
Just my phone, a Google Nexus 5X. It makes me smile that by far my most popular image on Viewbug wasn't taken with with the $1000+ camera/lens combo I normally carry everywhere.Inspiration
I'd been looking for something more interesting than just a shot of my bike leaning against a tree. I was riding on my own so there was no real chance of an action shot. When I cam across the tunnel, it was the extra bit of visual interest i was looking for.Editing
As I took the photo on my phone, I decided I should edit it on my phone as well to keep it mobile-authentic. I bumped up the contrast and tweaked the highlights and shadows a bit in the Photoshop Express app.In my camera bag
If I'm actually heading out and planning to be taking photos I'll have my Pentax K50 in my bag and my two favourite lenses, my Pentax DA 55-300 and my Samyang 16mm F2 wide angle prime. I have an 18-55 kit lens and a 35mm F2.4 prime knocking around in my bag too but I tend to use them much less.Feedback
The camera does not make the photographer. Doesn't mean I'm not saving up for Full Frame K1 though...
