Use to keep five of them. Strange creatures, they take in water through their backsides by sitting in pools and then wax themselves to keep the moisture inside their bodies

Behind The Lens
Location
The photograph was taken at a reptile exhibit. Sometimes these are great places to photograph exotic creatures.Time
I spent the whole morning at that exhibit. This is by far one of the best images of the day.Lighting
The biggest challenge was shooting through glass. This image is a focus stack and any glare would have disrupted post processing. The key to shooting through a glass enclosure is having your lens as close to the glass as possible. It also helps if your clothing is all black so as not to reflect into the glass. In some instances you can use your person to flag some of the ambient light.Equipment
This was shot on a canon 70D with a 100mm macro lens on a tripod.Inspiration
These creatures are so tiny with such fine details, i wanted to capture that uniqueness in a way that flattered the creature and made it seem larger than life.Editing
This image is a focus stack - a series of photos at varying focal distances are taken while maintaining the framing and later compiled into a new composition that delivers more detail than would otherwise be possible. The technique works for larger subject matter and landscapes as well.In my camera bag
Aside from a camera and my trusty 50mm lens and spare batteries, I carry a secondary lens that offers me more flexibility depending on the circumstance.Feedback
Sometimes you don't even have to leave the city to find the exotic. A travelling exhibit or museum can offer a lot of interesting subject matter and in some cases you may find that you have more control over your image because of the subdued environment.
