I am surprised by the black and white look, very cool, the textures and focus are very interesting. Soft and sharp, very cool! Jeff

Location
I took this photo in my backyard.Time
I was trying out my new 50mm lens in the shade at around sunset and I was trying to determine how effective the low aperture could be. This image stood out for how the depth of field varied throughout the image, but still presented the subject in a flattering way.Lighting
Well, the point of shooting this subject was to experiment in the shade, and with just enough light from the setting sun, it created this great isolation that in my opinion helped to enhance the feeling the depth of field provided. It also allowed me to more practically experiment with an extremely low aperture in less than ideal lighting conditions, where i didn't want to pump up the ISO.Equipment
This shot was taken hand held, with a 50mm lens, 1.4 aperture and no flash.Inspiration
Well as i was looking to work in the shade, this flower, a tiger lily, had a beautiful range of textures and colours and while the colour version looks good too, black and white really put an emphasis on the texture of the flower.Editing
I simply converted the original image to black and white from colour. I believe that the original colour image didn't lend itself as well to the textures and depth of field that black and white does. Black and white also furthered the isolation of the subject. In my camera bag
I always carry multiple memory cards and an extra battery when i've got my camera. There is a monopod in the trunk of my car and a tripod at the front door. I think that while i want to be prepared for the day - i don't want to be bogged down by too much equipment. Keep it simple, silly!Feedback
I think that capturing something similar to this image is circumstantial, i had enough time, and when i took this image i set out to experiment with a 1.4 aperture in less than ideal lighting conditions. Sometimes the best images can be created through experimentation which in turn allows you to get to know your camera better enabling you to take more images the way you want to. I didn't go out with any goals other than, "what can i do with 1.4 in the shade".
