Nice! I love their intent stare! I have one quite similar, but taken through typical wire fence.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Time

While trying to find a great shot of one of the lions, I came across this big guy laying outside of a small man-made cave. I believe it was about 1:30 pm in the afternoon, and taken through plexiglass.

Lighting

There were a few clouds out which helped with the perfect lighting. The clouds broke letting a nice ray of sunshine hitting him at the perfect angle.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon T3i, 75x300mm telephoto lens, no tripod or flash. I got as close to the plexiglass as I could and took the shot.

Inspiration

The look on his face says it all. He was staring at another male lion, watching him intently, and I wanted to capture the shot before he took off. Luckily for me he stayed there for quite some time.

Editing

I did a bit of post-processing just to darken the background so the focus was on his face.

In my camera bag

My Canon T3i, 75x300mm lens, 18x55mm lens, 64gb memory card, many filters, tripod, extra batteries, & charger.

Feedback

The only advice I have is to be patient and you will get the best shot. Look for unique settings.
