Location
I took this photo at the Six Gun Territory in Williston, Florida in 2015. Maddy and her grandfather Roger joined about fifty other riders ("train robbers") in a spectacular simulated train robbery. I shot from quite a distance with a 300 mm setting and had to enlarge and crop quite a bit from the original images.Time
The day was overcast and there was a light drizzle of rain falling when the photo was taken.Lighting
The lighting was perfect for the outdoor images that I took that day because being overcast, there were no harsh shadows to be cast by the sun.Equipment
I used my Nikon D7100 DSLR set to shutter priority with a Nikkor 70 - 300 lens. The shot was hand held with VR activiated at 1/125 sec, ISO 100, f 5.6 at 300 mm focal length.Inspiration
I attended the Six Gun Territory event specifically to see Maddy ( she is also my granddaughter) ride and participate in the shootout.Editing
I took the photo as a raw (NEF) image and converted it to black and white using Photoshop CS6 with the Nik Silver Efex Pro plugin. In my camera bag
My camera usually has the Nikkor 18 - 140 mm lens because if its versatility. In this image I used my 70-300 mm lens because most of the shots were taken at a long distance. In my bag I carry a polarizing filter, a remote shutter controller, a wired shutter controller, and a 48 mm macro lens for my third lens. I also carry a 4x4 foot piece of black cloth to provide a dark background for macro images of insects and flowers. Also in my bag is a bean bag that my wife made that I use to provide a steady support for my camera on a solid surface when I don't have my tripod with me.Feedback
Whenever I shoot images at a distance as this image was, I try to use the lowest possible ISO to reduce noise because invariably I'm going to have to enlarge the image considerably.
