Location
I was driving trough the Myakka River State Park near Sarasota, Florida when I saw this area of the flooded forest from the road. The time of the year was in September, the height of the rainy season in Southwest Central Florida. Much of the Park's forested area was underwater.Time
The photo was taken mid afternoon on a partly cloudy day.Lighting
Even though it was a bright sunny day, I waited until a cloud passed in front of the sun to reduce any harsh shadows that might appear in direct sunlight.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7100 with an 18 - 140 Nikkor lens, mounted on a tripod. I used the camera's delayed timer to trigger the shutter. No flash was used.Inspiration
When I first came upon the scene, I was immediately drawn to the mirror-like reflection of the fern-covered live oak trees on the surface of the water. I liked the horizontal position of the trees. The resurrection ferns that covered the trees were a vibrant green color due to the recent rainfall. Resurrection ferns get their name due to their ability to change from a dull-brown color to a bushy vibrant green color within hours of being drenched after it rains.TEditing
The image was slightly cropped and the color vibrancy was increased using PHotoshop CS6.In my camera bag
I recently purchased a Tamron 18 -400 mm lens for my Nikon D7100 that I find so versatile that I seldom need to change lenses. It works great for landscapes at 18mm and takes tremendous closeups of birds at 400 mm. I do carry other lenses in my bag but rarely use them since I purchased the Tamron. In my bag I also carry variable neutral density filter, a polarizing filter, a remoted and a wired shutter release, an extra battery with charger, a bean bag to hold my camera steady on a solid surface, and a folded 4 x 4 foot piece of black cloth to use as a background for closeup shots of flowers and insects.Feedback
Whenever I try to capture reflections on the surface of water, I do it on a day when there is no breeze present, especially when the subject is on a large open body of water.
