When we took this, it was a heat index of 116 but the tortured look was from inside this talented actor

SHE deserves an OSCAR. Even the Still shows her Starship.

This is an outstanding portrait, it is full of unpretentious realism. You have a wonderful eye and a talent for being an opportunist - congrats on this backstage shot.

A great day with a great cast. I was the head bad guy but of course, had my trusty Sony with me too. Thanks! I really really liked this one too

Wonderful portrait. Unfortunately I can’t read the whole story because my phone does not respond when I click on “See More”. My nephew is a part of the costume department door Chicago P.D.

Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken literally 'on-set' of the movie, "With My Soul". The release date is April 2016. It was in Louisiana USA and hot and sticky outside. The heat index was 116 degrees. This was between takes and even though I was there as a main character, I always have a camera as I bet y-o-u do :-)

Time

We always had to take a required break at around 2 pm because of the oppressive heat. Eat a little, and most important - Hydrate! We went through cases and cases of water. This was the time I would wander, camera in hand, searching.

Lighting

The light for this image was shade. We sought shade. Under an ancient live oak with its spread of curved and moss covered branches, the light was a massive soft box. The highlights on her face were left untouched and easily accessible to the lens because in the heat the men sweat and the women glistened. By positioning her in the covered sunlight, I/we were able to capture both.

Equipment

Sony A7ii or Sony A7 Mark 2 in other words. With 5 point internal stabilization hand holding this light full frame is easy in almost all lighting conditions. Standard kit lens.

Inspiration

Photographers are artists. Actors are artists. I know this from shooting operas and dance. We all are looking to make something more than we see, show more of what we feel, and share all of that with the world through a discipline we craft on our own. I suggest it to you!

Editing

There was little post on this image. Of course it was rendered to black and white, and a few tonal adjustments in ACR but I really wanted the grip and overwhelming difficulty to show as is.

In my camera bag

I believe in travel light. I carry my 2 Sonys - A7ii with kit lens and a Sony A300 with its kit lens as a backup just in case. Extra memory cards for both, lens covers, and now a new 24-240 lens my 'Italian Model' wife got me for Christmas this year. I have a tripod I take but the truth is, I almost always just leave it in the car.

Feedback

You can get this kind of image! When I was speaking about inspiration above, I referred to the joy of working with other artists. ASK them! Dancers near you? Of course! Humans dance, there are clubs and kids and professional organizations. They will love it too! Actors? They really really love it - just remember NO FLASH and hide yourself. Offer to shoot rehearsals. Get known and it will all fall into place for you .. and them. See my profile and you will see painters. Painters want some other artist to appreciate their works... and something they can use. Let that be you! Have a few (don't overload) images of 'art' styled images to show remembering you want to get them what they want 1st so what you want will just happen.... and ASK and ASK again. Be a servant to their craft so that you may be a servant to yours.
