Behind The Lens

Location

This art work was taken at the State Capital building in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The building created and built by the famous Huey Long and a dress made by my wife!

Time

We arrived on 'set' - so to speak - at 6:30 am. I had come the previous day to do a test shoot with my partner and Wife, Marcia. We wanted to make sure the sun was just peeking over so ancient Live Oaks and 'blasting' against the hand cut sandstone. It was pretty against the early morn blue skies. BUT the day of the shoot, driving there, I could see dark storm could rolling in as forecast. Foolishly I was disappointed at what was going to occur after so much preparation. :-)

Lighting

As it turned out, the light was still blasting against the sandstone of Huey Long Capital, and the dark dark clouds were the PERFECT backdrop to the shoot! All that I had fear being wrong - was exactly right. The blue hour turned golden, and the drama of the contrast accentuated the feel of the dress Marcia had made for the event

Equipment

THIS IMAGE was hand held because we were racing the storm. I wanted to catch the shots from many different place and angles so it was rush rush rush. Indeed we did get rained on and just as it started, the three of us rolled and twisted up the 100 yards of material in the gown and got it in the large industrial sized garbage bag I was destined to keep it in. TURNS OUT that the rain was short lived so the beautiful model, Karlee, only a little damp and we could continue to shoot the rest of the series. You can find a few on the on my page here or on my Facebook page

Inspiration

I had shot this model a few days before for her portfolio, as she was off to a show in California. The images kept coming back knock out great, shot after shot so I called her and offered up the idea of us 'playing picture' at the crack of dawn for fun. More than willing this top notch model, made her own arrangements for hair and make-up, pre dawn the day of the shoot. Met us there (the legislature was in session) dirt early and we were off

Editing

Post? Hmmm, yes but no too :-) I had shot the location the day before so I already knew my settings. A little gamma correction, adding contrast to the dark sky so the exposure on her was correct already but precious little more. NOW on the others (on my page) where she is against the brick wall (actually my favorite of the series), I added a painterly effect through a number of techniques

In my camera bag

I always have a back up camera for important things I shoot with a Sony A7Rm2 with a native Zeis 24-240 that never ever leaves the body. My back up is the Sony A7m2. I carry a tripod, which I am getting used to using more these days, a couple of batteries in my jeans pocket, a polarizing filter that I rarely use but should,

Feedback

The most Important thing for a rookie like myself doing a big deal shoot I made up out of thin air is..... Be Prepared. I am sooooo happy I pre shot the location the day before because the weather changed dramatically (slight pun intended) but I did not freak because I knew so much from the day before. Because I was confident, she was confident. TRY new stuff! Heck fire, I shoot macro and symphonies - closed environment things but there I was dead of summer, Louisiana Hot at dawn (82 degrees at 7am), with a dress we made the day before off the internet instruction based on something I saw on Creative Live, and a storm approaching...clickin' away. And the result? Big weather makes Big memories. The future belongs to the bold. Go Adventure. There is a Zen saying, "The Master has failed more times than the beginner has started". I agree. Go Adventure
