I got this shot at the top of Mount Fuji in JapanTime
We had hiked through the night to arrive by sunrise and barely made it. We had then had gotten ramen and stamps at the top, followed by photos, so this was probably an hour and a half to two hours after sunrise.Lighting
There was a crazy amount of backlight coming from the clouds, this made shooting for silhouette a much better prospect that trying to keep the texture of the clouds visible and still see the foreground subjects.Equipment
Just my little Pentax Q mirrorless cameraInspiration
I love doing flips, especially in unique and notable locations. A flip on the summit of Japan's largest mountain was much to great an opportunity to pass up.Editing
Yes. The photo was originally taken in color, but due to the backlighting of the clouds and the dark rock of the summit, the shot was nearly black and white. I took the last little bit of color out, and adjusted the contrast a little to bring out the texture of the clouds. In my camera bag
I normally have my Canon 40d, a Tamron 16-300mm lens, as well as a Canon 10-22mm and/or 55-250mm depending on the location. I generally have a backup camera of some sort (either a waterproof point and shoot, or the Pentax, depending on the day). A mini-tripod is also a common stapleFeedback
Go hike awesome places!! The best pictures come spur of the moment from locations that inspire you. If you're looking for the mountaintops above clouds view from Fuji, we hiked it in mid August, and clouds are common in the morning that time of year from my understanding.
