Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my flat, as it has one side of Windows allowing copious amounts of natural light.

Time

Taken in the morning just before heading out on a photo exploration day!

Lighting

Nothing of huge note, just all natural.

Equipment

Using a Nikon d610, macro exstension tube on a 50mm lens, open apeture.

Inspiration

The eye is the window to the soul. I love taking pictures where I can capture people, the eyes particularly, the opening phrase there is true and I wanted to evoke a sense of this in this picture.

Editing

I generally only use Lightroom for all my editing, using the select tool enabling just the iris pushed the rest of the image to extra exsposure while holding the iris where it was gave the image that mirror type look that draws your eye back when ever it goes to roam the image. Pushed the clarity to get all the details from the iris and then pushed the colour slightly to add the 'pop'.

In my camera bag

I will always carry the d10, but the depending on what I intend to shoot will depend on the lens. I prefer to go out with just one lens attached. Although this limits what you can do sometimes it forces creativity. For example if I go out to do city scales and have attached a wide angle lens, but spot a particularly good street portrait shot, composing the image in that wider box yet maintaining the scene you have in your head is a real challenge as it can get lost in the wider scene.

Feedback

Although I used a macro tube (the cheap way to macro) as you can see it is possible to get good results. I took about 50 shots of the same eye (the Mrs got extremely impatient about that one!) and took my time selecting just the right shot, I cannot stress enough that one click does not do the trick! You get to the editing and just wish one thing was a cm to the left etc. Natural light for the eye! Flash just creates an obvious light as well as constricting the iris, also you get brilliant shapes and contours in the reflection from natural light that close.
