Location
This is a shot of the Vancouver Skyline, taken from the Lonsdale Quay-North Vancouver a favorite place for photographers and Tourists visiting North Vancouver..Time
Photography is partially about opportunity. You gotta be willing to bear the elements, and get out there even with no sleep and grab that shot, that's dedication and passion for the art.. I took this shot between 3 and 4 am when the super moon was at its best moment and location... Some of the best photography a photographer can grab is when nobody else is awake...Lighting
Absolutely, I'm not very technical or knowledgeable when it comes to lighting, but I can tell you this... As I was taking the shot and I took several, I had it in my mind what I was going to do wit the shot after(effects)so I was factoring the immense glow of the super moon, the glow from the Sails at Canad Place and Sears Tower and from the buildings, so i kept playing with the exposure settings on my camera until the lighting was perfect for the effect I created here... I played around with it a bit more in Photoshop as well... When I took the shot, I thought , many have take the same shot with their cameras and camera phones, what I can do different with the shot and lighting to create something completely unique and different and Voila....Equipment
The shot was taken with my trusty Nikon D200, Tripod, and an Nikkor 18-200mm VRII lens....Inspiration
I've take many shots down at the Quay, it's a great attraction for photographers, but this was not just any night or just any shot, this was a super moon moon shot(supermoon - when the moon is closest to the earth) but I also wanted to do something special with the shot afterwards as well..I set out to create a real "Moon Over Vancouver" shot with great contrast... It's a pretty unique photo and I think I succeeded in creating the "effect" I was looking for...Editing
I actually embellished the size of the moon just a slight bit, and I played around with the colors in the shot as well.. I needed to make this shot of the supermoon really stand out, and I was really after a very surreal effect , I wanted to have something in my portfolio that stood out for other shots I've taken especially previous supermoon shots.. I use 3 photography software programs, Photoshop, ON1 and DXO-Photolab, it' great because you can really get some great results mixing it up a bit with these photo editors...In my camera bag
Actually as we speak... I have broken 18mm-200mm VR lens, a broken 18-55mm VR lens, a Nikon 200 body with a malfunctioning auto focus ring, a 70-300mm AF telephoto lens, 6 high end tripods and Im hoping to have the money to buy a Nikon D800 from a friend who shoots for Vogue MagazineFeedback
Yes, be creative, but do not over digitize your photos either... Use several program to edit your shot, push the envelop on creativity, explore the unexplored with your shot... You gotta sleep with your camera as well, Photographic opportunities wont wait around for you, especially lunar ones like this one... Also, imagination plays a big part in a shot like I took and produced... Invite the viewer into a new world you create with your shot... Take their minds on a journey with your shot.. Thank you - Happy Shooting -EyeContakt Photography
