Location
The photo was taken in Itbayat, Batanes in the Philippines. It was during a photography trip with fellow photography enthusiasts.Time
This was about 7 to 7:30am, we were up in Mt. Karoboboan for a sunrise shoot and this was after our shoot. While we were waiting for breakfast to be set up at the hut, I walked around the area looking for other things to shoot.Lighting
The light was beautiful up at Mt. Karoroboan, we just finished our sunrise shoot and was walking around the area to practice shooting objects close up. I saw this white snail on a green pouch and the color contrast was beautiful, especially with the translucent body of the snail.Equipment
This was shot using Nikon D60 with 18-200mm lens, handheld, no flashInspiration
The light was beautiful up at Mt. Karoroboan. We just finished our sunrise shoot and was walking around the area. I found this green leaf pouch with one white snail on its side. I was shooting the one snail then suddenly our guide saw me and opened out the pouch exposing about 25-30 of these little creatures. The first reaction I had was "yewww" as it grossed me out, which ironically made it more interesting for me to shoot. I've never seen white snails before and I was amazed at the translucent body. Apparently, the white snails were collected by our guide when we were on the other side shooting for sunrise and he used a big leaf to make a pouch to keep them. That first snail I saw had apparently escaped from inside the pouch ;-) The guide told us that he's bringing this home to eat. White snails are a delicacy in this island.Editing
I shot this in RAW and did the usual post processing, adjusted shadows, highlights, clarity. Other than that, no editing nor cropping done.In my camera bag
I have a Nikon D5300 with 18-200mm lens these days, but for this shot I was using my old D60.Feedback
Look up, look down, move high, move low - there's a lot of good subjects out there that you may be surprised to find in the most unexpected places. On the technical side, make sure that if you're shooting handheld, you get enough shutter speed to match your focal length to prevent shake, and crank up the ISO when needed. Here, I wanted to achieve shallow depth of field so I had to zoom my lens to 200mm at the same time prevent handshake.
