Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Sanur Beach in Bali. I stayed at a hotel where the beach was steps out my room.

Time

I had an extra day in Bali after the rest of our photo trek group left, so I transferred to Sanur from Ubud to be closer to the airport as I had an early morning flight out. This gave me an opportunity to enjoy the sunrise this time. Set my alarm, and walked out to the beach in front of the hotel to enjoy this quiet scene. It is my first time to enjoy the sunrise where the sun rose at the horizon along the waters.

Lighting

It was pretty dark when I stepped out to the beach that morning. I love how the light created shape on both people and the dog who were also enjoying the sunrise that morning.

Equipment

Nikon D60, 18-200mm travel lens, tripod, no flash

Inspiration

Although shooting silhouettes are a bit cliche, I wanted to capture the feeling I get while I was watching the sunrise. To me, the people and the dog gave the photo some life, capturing the different ways people enjoy the sunrise, one was shooting it just like I was and the woman was just seated on the log relaxing and taking in the morning scene. Even the dogs take time out from playing on the beach to enjoy the sunrise and the people around him.

Editing

I usually shoot in RAW, so yes, I did the usual post-processing, adjust the shadows and highlights, clarity and vibrance.

In my camera bag

I love using my travel lens and I use this most of the time, being that I'm always faced with limited time to shoot while I'm on the move. With my travel lens, I get to shoot various shots, close up, wide, etc, without having to change lenses for each scene. I also have an extra mirrorless camera as a backup and for shooting street scenes.

Feedback

I'm a traveler at heart, I love to discover and experience new things. I'm also a photography enthusiast and sometimes I just shoot to document but sometimes, I will try to find ways to capture the non-tangible aspects of travel. I used to shoot sunrises that only included the sun, but I realized that in order to capture a feeling, one has to include some sort of life. Here, it's the people and dog that you find are part and parcel of the sunrise scene each morning in Sanur, Bali.
