Location
This photo of the sunset over a harvested cotton field was taken near my home in north Mississippi. It was in October and you can see two large bales of cotton still sitting in the field. The tree line surrounds a large creek serving as a watershed that feeds into a small river a few miles away.Time
As you can see, this photo was taken as the sun dipped below the horizon.Lighting
I used an iso setting of 100 and the f4 aperture, therefore, it was necessary to use a tripod with the resulting 0.25 second shutter speed.Equipment
The only equipment I used was my Nikon D5300, a Nikkor lens at the 50 mm focal point, and a tripod to compensate for the slow shutter speed.Inspiration
I wanted to take a memorable sunset image. The conditions turned out perfectly and I was able to capture the vibrant colors seen in the image.Editing
I adjusted the colors minimally in Lightroom to get the vibrant tones. In my camera bag
I carry a Nikon D5300, and a Nikon D5200 as a backup to keep from spending too much time changing lenses. I also carry 10 spare batteries so I don't miss an opportunity.Feedback
Always have a tripod to capture low light images. Use your lowest iso setting to cut down on electronic noise. Arrive about 30 minutes before sunset, focus on the object nearest to you, and use the lowest number aperture on your lens. Then wait until the sun goes down and take a lot of photos. If your hand isn't steady, get a remote control to minimize camera shake.
