California Sister (Adelpha bredowii)
(aka Arizona Sister)
The butterfly in this photo was mud puddling in a canyon just west of Alma, New Mexico. This canyon is only miles from the Arizona border.
The California sister is named for its black and white coloration on the fore wing that resembles a Nuns habit. This glorious butterfly is a beautiful sight to see flying around Oak trees and sipping juices from fruit. They rarely visit flowers, but enjoy basking in the sun and mud puddling. They are usually quite easy to get close to as long as you are quiet. A distinguishing marking is the black outline around the orange on their forewings. If you get to see the undersides of their wings, they have a lovely blue mixed in with the colors.
The California sister Butterfly larva eats the leaves of oaks including the Coast Live Oak, Quercus agrifolia and Canyon Live Oak, Quercus chrysolepsis. They also overwinter in these trees.

One could not wish for a more graphically perfect looking butterfly to capture.
