Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during a family vacation on Bonaire, part of the Leeward Antilles (also known as the ABC islands). This was a new experience for me, as I had never been to a tropical island before this trip. It gave me the chance to capture more exotic subjects and scenery.

Time

This was taken at sunset, creating some amazing colors in the sky. It was an absolutely beautiful evening!

Lighting

The lighting was natural, and couldn't have been more perfect for this shot.

Equipment

This shot was taken with my Canon PowerShot A650 IS point & shoot. I was in between DSLRs at the time, and this was my favorite camera at the time. I found that it could always reliably capture a scene the way I wanted, even in Auto mode. Unfortunately, it suffered from a fall months later and ceased to function.

Inspiration

This schooner had been anchored off the coast the whole week we were down there, but I never could seem to get a shot of it that I was happy with until this evening, with the sun setting right behind it and framed by the ship's rigging. I knew I finally had a special shot!

Editing

No post-processing was used in this photo. It was all-natural!

In my camera bag

My main rig now is a Canon 5D Mk IV, usually paired with a 16-35mm f28L III. I also tend to carry a 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS II with me when I travel in cases where I see something more distant that I wish to shoot.

Feedback

Don't settle for just a few photos. You never know exactly when the sun will be "just right". Be willing to come back to the subject several times, if possible. This lets you see it under different lighting situations, time of day, etc. Patience is definitely needed, as well. I snapped photos and watched the sun set for nearly an hour before getting this photo (one of the final shots I took that day). If I had stopped just a few minutes earlier, I would have missed this, which would have been a shame, as the view was breathtaking!
