Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Maine. I was heading to take photos of the Nubble Lighthouse in Cape Neddick and saw a small amusement park that was closed for the winter. My daughter and I hopped the fence and started taking photos. It was her first time seeing snow and the memories of that day are perfect.

Time

This was taken in the latter part of the afternoon. It was the dead of winter and about 20 degrees outside, the sky was mostly grey. I live in Florida and have grown unaccustomed to being that cold. I hate the heat but that was a bit too cold. Still, it was worth every second of it.

Lighting

This was actually edited using inexpensive online editing service, so the lighting wasn't that important. The background was an overcast day so that helped keep the lighting uniform in post processing.

Equipment

This was taken using an iPhone 4S. I know many photographers cringe about people using a smart phone as a camera but I do it all the time. I have a Canon Rebel T3i but I am not comfortable using it, and when I took these, that I had only owned my DSLR for a couple of months. I used both that day but the images that came out the best were taken with my phone. The iPhone camera is fairly versatile and it's progressively becoming more complex and offering more flexibility and options when it comes to capturing great shots. I think being able to envision what will come out well and having a good eye is just as important as fancy equipment. And all the expensive equipment in the world won't do a bit of good if you don't know how to use it or you don't have it on hand when you need it. When I look at the info on the photo, for settings it was ISO 50, Aperture f/2.4. I am truly learning as I go when it comes to both photography and using my DSLR.

Inspiration

I love ferris wheels but it's not often that you get to see them taken apart and stored for the winter. The small wooden fence around it added to the feel of the photo rather than detracting from it. I miss living up north and I love winter, so this combined so many things I enjoy and miss.

Editing

For this photo, I used Pic-Monkey for post processing. It's an inexpensive and very user friendly online photo editing service. It's helped me learn a lot about photo editing. I also use Gimp, another free photo editor that is often referred to as the "free photo shop." I like that one because it's a download and no internet required, but it's one I reserve for more intense editing, or editing that I am doing when I have more time to dedicate to it. I have probably fifty mobile editing apps on my phone at any given time. I sometimes use a couple different ones on the same photo, and about five that are favorites. The good thing about mobile editing apps is the convenience. I work overnight and often during the day, I will lay in bed trying to fall asleep. I don't always feel like being social so instead of jumping online, I will grab a photo and play with it on my phone. Often, I will look for the perfect quote, either my own or a famous one, to put on the photo and will later post them to my author page.

In my camera bag

I always have my phone and that is my most important piece of equipment. When I do carry my camera bag, it contains my Canon Rebel T3i, and a couple of different lenses. I try to make sure I have extra SD cards because I have had them fail and it is the most disappointing feeling. It's also extremely frustrating for me to have rare time off that I can plan on taking photos and I can't because my card is telling me I need to reformat (thus losing all that is on there). Like I said, I am truly a novice when it comes to photography but I love every aspect of it. As I learn more, maybe my bag will become more sophisticated but for now, my crazy hours limit the time I have to devote to photography so I have to be able to make the most of the time I have.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to get closer! Sometimes, a little B&E is worth it. (just kidding!) This place was clearly closed, and there was no one around. There was also nothing that we would have been accused of stealing or damaging, so if we had been caught, it was obvious we weren't there to cause trouble. I will pull over at odd spots, often on my way home from work in the morning. It's rush hour for everyone else, but for me, it's time to wind down after a long night at work. I'm sure I look crazy to some people, wandering around in a lab coat and scrubs, trying to get the perfect shot of the sun reflecting off the water, or a strange looking dragon fly or whatever else has managed to catch my eye. That's ok by me. I used to get embarrassed but I don't anymore. An interesting photo is worth the stares.
