Mesmerizing image...….congratulations on your finalist award!

Behind The Lens

Location
This shot was taken in my living room.
Time
Morning
Lighting
The morning light shines through our living room window. It was Christmas morning and I was doing my best to capture some shots of her opening presents. I asked her to turn around and she did, but began to walk toward me. Instead of recomposing I noticed she walked right into the light coming through the window and just began shooting. All the shots were crummy except this one. Unfortunately I was only able to capture part of her right eye so I cropped it to this composition.
Equipment
Nikon D300; Nikon 35mm f1.8.
Inspiration
My daughter...no other inspiration needed.
Editing
This shot was pretty maintenance free. I use CS5 right now and shot this in RAW. Once minor adjustments were made in the RAW converter I dodged the eyes at 5% as well as the lips and cropped the image to this composition.
In my camera bag
Nikon D300; Nikon 50mm f1.4 AIS;Nikon 50mm f1.8G; Nikon 85mm f1.8D; Nikon 35mm f1.8G DX; Tokina 12-24mm; Sigma 150mm f2.8; Manfrotto Tripod; LEE Big Stopper and assorted LEE adapter rings; Nikon SB 600 flash.
Feedback
Kids move fast and all the time. Just keep shooting and you will get lucky with a few salvageable shots. Think of shooting kids in their natural environment like shooting action sports or race cars. Some shots turn out, most don't. Just be patient and shoot a lot. Understand how to set up your camera for action so the camera does not get in your way and if you shoot in RAW the advantage is you do not need to worry about white ballance or oversaturation. Just shoot and adjust those things in the RAW converter.
