Behind The Lens

Location
Boone Plantation, Georgia.
Time

Lighting
This shot was taken inside a butterfly arboretum that had a screen over the entire structure for walls. The screen acted as a natural diffuser.
Equipment
Nikon D40; Nikon 18-55 lens. At that time I had a Nikon D70 and D40 on me. Currently I shoot a D700 and D300.
Inspiration
My wife and I visited the Boone Plantation (her idea after seeing the movie "The Notebook") and as we were walking up to the main house there was this small butterfly hut. We ducked inside and there were thousands of butterflies of all types fluttering about. I took a few shots and as I zoomed in on this flower the butterfly landed in the perfect spot...'click'.
Editing
Mild saturation enhancement and sharpening in post processing along with some strategic cropping to create this final composition. I was able to throw the background out a bit due to the distance from the butterfly to the back of the arboretum but not enough for my taste due to the max distance I had for this lens at 55mm so I used Gaussian blur in Photoshop to help the background. It takes patience to layer and erase out the foreground but it is worth it.

Nikon D700; Nikon D300; Nikon 50mm f1.4 AIS;Nikon 50mm f1.8G; Nikon 85mm f1.8D; Nikon 35mm f1.8G DX; Tokina 12-24mm; Sigma 150mm f2.8; Manfrotto Tripod; LEE Big Stopper and assorted LEE adapter rings; Nikon SB 600 flash. I rent the rest as needed.
Feedback
Always have a camera with you. Now that cell phones have great cameras and post processing tools there would be a rare acceptable excuse not to capture anything interesting. When photographing subjects like this I prefer to throw the background out to enhance the subject. This is hard to do without a fast telephoto lens but you can achieve this with even a slow lens if you can shoot your subject very close and the background is far away. Also Gaussian blur in Photoshop helps when you need just a little more butter.
